DLR Developing Fuel Cell Aircraft (Green Car Congress)

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) presented their HY4 project at  the International Trade Fair World of Energy Solutions in Stuttgart.  The HY4 will be a four passenger aircraft powered by a hydrogen fuel cell with a lithium battery to support peak power loads such as during take off and climbing. The HY4’s electric motor has an output of 80 kW and allows for a maximum speed of approximately 200 km/h (124 mph) and a cruising speed of 145 kmh/h (90 mph).  Depending on conditions it can have a range from 750 to 1500 kilometers (466 to 932 miles).  The first flight of HY4 is planned for Summer 2016, at Stuttgart Airport.
