The pledge aims to have zero emission vehicles dominate new sales by 2040
New Flyer of America, the US subsidiary of NFI Group, the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer and parts distributor in North America, has signed on to CALSTART’s Global Commercial Drive to Zero (D2Z) pledge in support of fast-tracking adoption of clean trucks and buses.
The Global Commercial Drive to Zero pledge is a coordinated, international effort championed by CALSTART and aimed at dramatically reducing emissions from trucks and buses in high-potential markets.
It was announced just before the Global Climate Action Summit took place September 12-14 in San Francisco, California. The pledge focuses on eight global market segments for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, with goals to achieve commercial success in each market internationally by 2025, and have zero emission technology dominate new sales in these segments by 2040.
Current signatories include government, elected officials, and industry leaders.
“We’re proud to support the Global Commercial Drive to Zero, to further our commitment in reducing emissions and building sustainability in public transit,” said New Flyer president Wayne Joseph. “CALSTART initiated an impressive global movement with this pledge, and as North America’s only manufacturer of all three zero-emission transit buses, this continues our work in increasing the presence of zero-emission vehicles on the continent. It will bring us one step closer to healthier, more connected communities that leverage smart mobility solutions.”
CALSTART launched the multi-year programme to enable and accelerate the growth of the global zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle (MHDV) sector. Progress in this area will help countries achieve the greenhouse gas emissions targets established under the Paris Accord.
“New Flyer signing the Global Commercial Vehicle Drive to Zero pledge is yet another powerful sign that industry is ready and able to step up on climate and air quality goals,” said CALSTART president and CEO John Boesel. “Global cities and regions are carrying these goals forward, but need support. The Drive to Zero work will help those leaders by providing guiding strategies and tools to quickly transform trucks and buses toward zero: bringing industry as an active partner.”
CALSTART is a national non-profit organisation headquartered in Pasadena, California. The organisation serves as a catalyst to accelerate the growth of the clean transportation technology industry. CALSTART has more than 190 member companies and offices in four states.
NFI has over 50 years manufacturing zero-emission buses in North America, and is the only provider of full suite bus solutions in North America, offering transit, motor coach, and low-floor cutaway buses.
New Flyer actively advocates for industry interoperability and in 2018 became the first licensee outside the Volvo Group to join OppCharge in North America. It also joined CharIN to support industry charging standards for all EVs, and became the first bus manufacturer in the world to sign on to the Shared Mobility Principles for Liveable Cities.
